Qualities of a Good Mentor

  • Commitment to the mentoring relationship

  • Engaging and inspiring

  • Willing and able to spend the time needed to maintain and build a professional relationship

  • Enthusiasm for the library profession

  • Have relevant experience in the field of study; knowledgeable about library procedures and current library issues

  • Knowledgeable about library programs and coursework

  • Have experiences to share with the mentee

  • A good communicator who will stay in touch with the mentee and provide useful feedback

  • Encourage the mentee to develop on their own, and make mistakes on their own, but provides guidance

  • Foster the interests of the mentee

  • Willing to take the time to get to know the mentee's interests, experience, skills, and abilities

  • Respectful; recognizes the worth of the individual mentee

  • Insightful about other people's strengths and weaknesses

  • Able to work with the mentee to establish ground rules

  • Be a non-judgmental listener; wise and patient
